What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser - an intense, pulsating beam of light - to remove unwanted hair.

During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.

Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes several laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

Areas that can be treated

With Light Sheer Hair Removal, we can treat almost any part of your body. For women the most common treatment areas include the face, under arms, bikini area and legs. For men the most common treatment areas include the chest, back, legs, and face.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Before laser hair removal, schedule a consultation with the doctor. The doctor will use this visit to:

  • Review your medical history, including medication use.
  • Discuss risks, benefits and expectations, including what laser hair removal can and can't do for you.
  • Take photos to be used for before-and-after assessments and long-term reviews.
  • At the consultation, be sure to discuss a treatment plan and related costs. Laser hair removal is typically an out-of-pocket expense.
  • The doctor will also offer specific tips to prepare for laser hair removal. For example:
    • Stay out of the sun. A tan increases the risk of side effects, such as skin lightening. If you have a tan - either from sun exposure or sunless tanning products - wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal. Some doctors recommend staying out of the sun for up to six weeks before laser hair removal.
    • Avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis. These hair removal methods can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal. Shaving is OK, however, since it preserves the hair shaft and follicle. In fact, shaving might even be recommended. Some studies suggest that shaving before laser hair removal improves results.

Before laser hair removal, the hair in the treatment area might be trimmed with a pair of scissors. You might also be fitted with special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam. The doctor might apply a topical anesthetic to your skin to reduce any discomfort during treatment.

During the procedure

The doctor will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin.

When the doctor activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the tiny sacs (follicles) where hair growth originates. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. Some discomfort in the skin is possible, and you'll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.

Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take several hours.

After the Procedure

You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal.

To reduce any discomfort, apply ice to the treated area. Your doctor might also suggest an aloe gel or other type of cream or lotion, as well as over-the-counter pain relievers. If you have a skin reaction immediately after laser hair removal, the doctor might apply a steroid cream to the affected area.

After laser hair removal, avoid sun exposure - both natural sunlight and tanning beds. When your skin has healed, use sunscreen whenever you're in the sun. You might also prepare yourself for possible hair shedding in the first few weeks after treatment. Don't mistake this for hair regrowth.

Results

Results of laser hair removal vary greatly from person to person. Multiple treatments can prolong the duration of hair loss - up to years in some cases - but hair regrowth is still possible. For best results, you might need five to seven treatments spaced a number of weeks apart. Additional periodic maintenance treatments - perhaps once every six to 12 months - might be needed as well.

Risks

Laser hair removal doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. Some hair could be resistant to the laser treatment or grow again after treatment - although the new hair growth might be finer and lighter in color.

The most common side effects of laser hair removal include:

  • Skin irritation: Temporary discomfort, redness and swelling are possible after laser hair removal. Any signs and symptoms typically disappear within several hours.
  • Pigment changes: Laser hair removal might darken or lighten the affected skin, usually temporarily. Skin lightening primarily affects those who have darker skin, especially if an incorrect laser is used at an incorrect setting.
  • Rarely, laser hair removal can cause blistering, crusting, scarring or other changes in skin texture.

Laser hair removal isn't recommended for the eyelid or surrounding area, due to the possibility of severe eye injury.

Why is it done?

Laser hair removal is used to remove unwanted hair. Common treatment locations include legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and bikini line. However, it's possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area - except the eyelid or surrounding area.

Hair color and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. For example, laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair because the laser beam targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair. However, advances in technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin.

Laser hair removal isn't generally effective for white, gray, red or blond hair - although treatment options for lighter hair continue to be investigated.

Question How does the Light Sheer Diode Laser System work?
Answer The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system's unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

QuestionWhat advantages does the LightSheer have over other laser hair removal systems?
Answer The LightSheer Diode Laser System was designed from the ground up for laser hair removal, so it has the wavelength, fluence, pulse width, and active epidermal cooling system - the ChillTip ideally suited for laser hair removal. The system is small, compact, and (in some models) portable, so it fits well into virtually every type of existing practices. The system's solid state construction makes it durable; it's state-of-the-art user interface makes it easy to use.

Question Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I've been using for years?
Answer The LightSheer Diode Laser System's design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Question Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?
Answer The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI) as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer.

Question Are the results permanent?
Answer The LightSheer laser has been cleared by the FDA for hair removal and permanent hair reduction on all skin types and tanned skin. To achieve a satisfactory level of clearance, 3-5 treatments are typically required.

Question What happens after the after the laser hair reduction procedure?
Answer Following Laser Hair Reduction, the target area treated with the laser is cleansed and normal activity can be resumed. There may be a slight reddening surrounding the follicles, but this will disappear in a matter of minutes in majority of cases. As with any treatment involving lasers, protect the treated skin with sun block and clothing. In the weeks following Laser Hair Reduction, hair may appear to be growing in the treated areas. Because the hair follicles are lifeless, this, in fact, is simply the body attempting to cast them off to get rid of them. They will easily purge themselves.

Hair not in its growth cycle cannot be targeted by Laser Hair Reduction. It is very important not to, pluck or bleach the hair before the treatment as it is necessary for the root of the hair to be targeted and the pigment of the hair to be visible to the hair removal laser.

More treatments may be required in order to obtain the results desired, and will depend on hair density, hair color, skin types, the treatment area, and your hair growth cycle.

Question Why multiple treatments are required?
Answer Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments. This is because the laser works best when hairs are in an early growth stage (referred to as anagen), and all the hairs are not in this phase at the same time.

Question What are the side effects?
Answer The appearance of the treated area immediately following treatment will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the procedure and the skin type. Side effects are rare and, if they do occur, are typically minor. They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are, in fact, positive clinical results and indicate that the follicle has responded to treatment. Most people return to normal activity right away. Our practice is pleased to offer the High Speed LightSheer DUET for permanent hair reduction with exciting speed and amazing comfort.

Question How many sessions do I need to achieve a smooth skin?
Answer Most people will need 3 to 6 treatments. In some areas, such as the legs, faster results will be achieved. Within three treatments, at least 50 percent of your hair will be gone forever. Within six treatments 90 percent, or higher, results will be achieved. You can expect similar results for the bikini area, under the arms, on the arms, and the facial and chest areas. The back area of men is usually more challenging and may take a few extra treatments. However, results may vary from person to person, which means that you can get faster results then someone else.

Question How long do I wait between each session? How do I know when to come for my next treatment?
Answer Facial Hair: Usually after first treatment, facial hair will shed within 10 days. Your next treatment will be when you start to see new hair growth, which is usually 5 to 6 weeks after the first treatment.

Legs: Legs are the best place for laser hair removal. Within 3 treatments you will achieve smooth, ingrown free legs and at least 50 percent of hair reduction will be achieved. The first 3 treatments may have to be 6 to 8 weeks apart. Then you may need to come for the following treatments every 8 to 12 weeks.

The best way to estimate your treatment dates is to observe the new hair growth. The subsequent treatment is usually 4 to 6 weeks after the previous treatment. When you start to see new stubble (new hair growth), you can make an appointment within the week.

Question Will I have hair between the sessions? How will I look?
Answer Your treated area will be cleared of most of the present hair during the treatment, while the rest of the treated hair will shed in two weeks leaving the area smooth and clean. Depending on the area, the skin will remain COMPLETELY clean and smooth for around 6 to 8 weeks in total, starting with the treatment date; and the time for your next session will be when you start to see little fine hairs starting to grow again. Repeating the sessions on time, the area will remain hair free throughout the entire multiple session procedure. You will look completely clean and smooth.

Question How soon do I expect to see results? How do I know it is working for me?
Answer You will see results starting with your VERY FIRST session. The hair growth will be less and the hairs finer and weaker; your skin will become smoother; and the hair pores on your skin will become less visible after each session. The results will become more impressive with each following session.

Question Does laser hair removal hurt?
Answer If you have tried any hair removal solution such as waxing, tweezing or electrolysis, along with any type of other laser and flash-lamp equipment, you will notice that our Light Sheer Diode Laser with its powerful cooling system, will provide much more comfort for the skin before, during and after the treatment. It will be a very easy treatment for all people and all areas in the body.

Question Is laser hair removal for everyone?
Answer Laser hair removal will not work on white, grey, light red or light blond hair follicles. Also people who are experiencing PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) may experience poor results unless they receive medical support along with the laser treatment.

Question Can I choose to achieve finer and less hair in some areas rather than a full removal?
Answer Yes you can. We can customize your treatment according to your needs and expectations. You can weaken and reduce your hair in any area while still leaving a certain amount.

Question I have ingrowns on my face, legs, bikini area and back. Would laser help?
Answer Absolutely. Even after one treatment you will notice that most of your ingrowns will be terminated. Within few weeks, the area will be smooth and the color of your skin will return to your original skin color.

Question How are the treatments priced?
Answer Prices are usually given per area per session. This is for the convenience of the clients of course, since as a consumer you will always have the option to stop after the number of sessions you believe are enough for you. However, multiple area and multiple treatment discounts are also available and can be discussed in our free consultation.

Question What should I do before/after laser hair removal?
Answer Your hair needs to be as short as possible for this treatment to be effective. Therefore we do recommend you to shave at least a day or two before. Since we will cover the entire area in each of your sessions (except for clean-up sessions) we do not actually need to see the hair. Shaving it removes the surface debris and allows the laser beam to penetrate and kill the root as it should.

After the treatments we advise you to treat your skin with care for the next 24 hours. Taking showers with boiling hot water, sweating excessively, rough exfoliating or products that contain a lot of chemical ingredients should be avoided since they can cause itchy, sensitive skin. After this period of time you can return to your daily habits with no danger whatsoever.

Question How about tanning? I keep hearing how it is bad for you if you are doing laser.
Answer A lot of people think tanning is dangerous combined with laser because the darker your skin, the riskier the treatment. This is completely false. Laser, even though you won't feel it that way, is a source of heat. Therefore, in order to make sure that too much heat will not cause your skin to get damaged, you must make sure to space out these activities. In other words, tanning and laser are perfectly compatible as long as you make sure there is enough time between them (usually 1-2 weeks is enough).
