Dermaroller (Roller lift)

Derma rollers are used for a treatment process called micro-needling or skin needling. It is a form of collagen induction therapy. The actual derma roller is made up of a small, solid wheel attached to a little stick that propels it backwards and forwards across your face in small sections. The roller is covered with hundreds of minuscule 'micro-medical' needles that penetrate the skin, creating lots of tiny micro injuries. Your skin responds by producing extra collagen to 'heal' the punctures, and that's what plumps up the skin again and enhances the natural blood supply – so you get a natural 'glow'. Depressed acne scars, wrinkles, skin texture and tightness are all improved as a result.

Derma Roller treats:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Anti – ageing / skin tightening
  • Acne scars/ pitted scars
  • Open pores / skin texture improvement
  • Stretch marks
  • Hair Loss

The Procedure

  • A local anaesthetic is applied on the skin to make the treatment comfortable.
  • The skin roller is then passed over the treatment area multiple times.
  • Skin needling can be used to improve the above skin conditions with less risk of skin pigment changes, especially with olive/darker skin types that commonly occur with laser treatment.
  • Usually 2-5 sessions are required for the optimal result.
  • Areas that can be treated are: The face, hands, neck, back and chest can be treated with skin needling; but most commonly, only the face is treated. Suitable candidates for skin needling – are those with acne scarring, fine lines and those looking to improve skin texture and tightness. It can be used on all skin types and from light to dark skins. As opposed to laser treatments, there is less chance of pigmentation problems after the treatment. It is not suitable for people who have open cuts, wounds or sun-burnt skin.

How the treatment feels?

Most patients describe derma roller as 'uncomfortable' but not painful. To make the treatment comfortable a topical local anaesthetic can be used.

Most non-surgical treatments work on the principle of superficially damaging or causing minor trauma to the skin and forcing the body to heal itself by stimulating the body's natural collagen reproduction. As we know, collagen, God's gift to good skin, gets reduced and destroyed by age and the sun. Derma roller also tightens the skin and reduces pigmentation and improves sun damaged skin.

Possible side-effects – Generally, you will experience some redness of the skin for a few hours after the procedure.

Advice for Dermaroller procedure

Pre Treatment
  • Stop all applications 2 days prior to the treatment day.
  • Use sunscreen regularly before the start of the treatment.
  • If you are on any kind of medication, share all details with the doctor performing the procedure.
On the day of treatment
  • Do not wear any make-up on the day of treatment.
  • A dermaroller procedure can sometimes have some very short-term after-effects, so don't be alarmed if you experience redness or irritation of skin for 1-2 days after treatment.
Post Treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure after the treatment. Use sun screen regularly, SPF 30+ or as advised.
  • Avoid saunas, steam and sunbathing for 7 days after the procedure.
  • You can wash your face 6-8 hours after the procedure, but we recommend using a gentle face wash.
  • We recommend a gap of 3-4 weeks between the sessions.
  • Post the procedure, remember to use a moisturizer every 6 hrs, for a period of at least 3 days.
  • Avoid applying any applications for 3 days after the treatment.

More than 70 million men and women suffer from hair loss issues just in the United States each year, let alone global figures. Hair loss is followed by hair thinning and more of your scalp being seen than usual. The skin of the scalp seen more than the amount of hair is an immediate indication of hair loss and a hair problem that worries men and women alike. It can make you appear older than your actual age, affect your confidence and make you feel awkward in social situations. The last thing you want is people questioning you about it which can lead to extreme anxiety, stress and frustration.

Derma Roller works on the simple principle of puncturing the skin and causing it a minor injury. What this does in return is to help the skin regenerate and heal which it wouldn’t do on it’s own. The healthy skin cells around the so called ‘injured’ area help the bald area to activate it’s collagen and elastin production, alongside the hair growth process. It’s literally like giving the hair follicle a much needed kick start to encourage hair growth. The Derma Roller needles also help at encouraging blood flow in the area which is directly responsible for encouraging hair growth and stopping hair loss.

Why hair loss and hair growth serums would be absolutely useless to work on their own is because the hair follicle is actually not on the surface of the scalp but a few cm’s below and to activate hair growth, a product would need to reach just there. Only Derma Roller with it’s 0.5mm needles and above can reach that deep and encourage the hair growth process.

Scientists suggest that the derma roller works by triggering the production of human growth factor. When the needles are rolled along the skin, they cause minor surface wounds to the tissue. The body then must work to produce new skin in the area of the wound and releases the human growth hormone and other chemicals to assist with this process. Supporters of the derma roller believe that when these chemicals are released they also stimulate the growth of hair in the affected area, which can help begin regrowth in areas of thinning.

Designed for both men and women, Derma Roller can be used on extending partition lines in women as well as long as you are careful not to cause any sort of tangling, which may only cause further hair breakage – the last thing you want. Derma Roller is designed to straighten the scalp as well which can help if you are suffering from mild hair loss and want to strengthen the hair follicle to prevent frequent breakage. Combine Derma Roller with hair growth serums, 2-3 times a week and see new hair growth a few weeks time.

How can Derma Roller help treat hair loss?

Derma Roller's unique mechanism of action has an amazing effect on your skin, and although it may come as a surprise to you, it also has the remarkable effect of encouraging your hair to grow back if you are suffering from hair thinning or hair loss.

Derma Roller relies on getting your skin to repair itself, and part of that effect involves getting follicles, the part of your skin from which hair grows, to restore themselves and work as normal. Derma Roller achieves these ends through its remarkable micro-needling effects. Fitted with 192 specially constructed micro-needles, the roller causes microscopic indentations in a deeper layer of skin called the dermis. Your skin then reacts to heal these small perforations, and in doing so begins to produce healthy amounts of a substance essential to maintaining healthy and youthful skin: collagen. Collagen treatments have been used in different shapes and sizes for many years, but only Derma Roller can stimulate Collagen production in a manner so simple that you can use it yourself at home. The overall effect of Derma Roller on your skin works to promote healthy follicles, and so reverse the effects of hair thinning and hair loss.

The new Dermapen uses the same principal but rather than using a rolling action, the Dermapen moves the needles in and out at a rate of about 1000 times per second. This avoids the rolling injury to the skin that can occur with the Dermaroller.

The new Dermapen, however, has a number of advantages. Patients felt that the Dermapen was much less painful and had shorter downtime than the Dermaroller. Dermatologists felt it was easier to use and enabled sites such as the upper lip and nose to be treated with ease. The Dermapen also showed significantly superior reduction in scar depth after a single treatment.

What can the DermaPen be used for?

DermaPen allows the physician to quickly treat specific skin areas - large or small - to achieve a number of goals.

  • Lip wrinkles
  • Skin Texture / Tone
  • Pore appearance
  • Increase product absorption
  • Superficial facial wrinkles
  • Skin texure on the neck
  • Acne Scarring / Trauma Scarring
  • Melasma and Pigmentation
  • Textural improvements to chest
  • Stretch marks
  • Treatment on the face is the primary location, but skin needling can successfully be used on any area of the body.

How deep does the DermaPen go?

From very superficial penetration to deep dermal penetration, the professional applications have a wide range of potential to improve and correct skin problems without the use of lasers. Penetration ranges begin at cosmetic depth of 0.25mm to clinical treatment depths up to 2.5mm.

Dermapen depths for different skin problems

Light penetration opens the skin long enough for the introduction of specific treatment serums. Since most product molecules are too large to cross the skin barrier, they can only be minimally effective.TheDermaPen opens the skin for a few minutes and this allows a huge increase of product penetration – your product ingredients can then reach beneath the surface where they will do the most good.Treatment serums can be selected for skin lightening, hydration, texture and pore tightening.

Mid penetration depths can have a very positive impact on superficial sun damage and light scarring to improve skin texture and tone and a visible improvement in pore size appearance.

Deeper levels of penetration can improve acne scars, burn scars, stretch marks and tighten skin and soften wrinkles.

DermaPen reduces the risk of post treatment pigmentation that is more prevalent with laser heat for ethnic skin (Patients will still need to use sun protection and avoid heat exposure while in the recovery phase.

Depending on the treatment goal, you can expect to see results immediately for product introduction benefit to 4 to 6 months for scarring.

Is skin needling painful?

Superficial treatment levels are very tolerable with nothing more than topical numbing gel (the lightest application requires no numbing at all)applied prior to the treatment.

What about downtime?

Day 1: Erythema and red appearance and severity will depend upon how aggressive the treatment was performed.
Day 2: A red hue or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Swelling may be more noticeable on the second day.
Day 3: Skin can be pink or normal color. Swelling subsides.
